5/6/2025Something confused me about one of your statements. In the same sentence you said companies could absorb the tariff and that they would pass the expense on to consumers. Nothing is absorbed if it is passed on to consumers. I'm unclear what your notion of "absorb" could mean if the outcome is a corresponding change in consumer prices.

Also something I consistently see commentators get wrong. All discussions are framed in terms of unconstrained working capital. Capital is rarely unconstrained. Tariffs ultimately must cause changes in the volume purchased because that's how the arithmetic of division works. When companies transact in smaller volume, their ability to offset fixed costs or other costs not associated with that item decline. That puts industry in an increasingly deteriorating financial position unless prices to their customers inflate enough to not only cover the tariff, but also to cover the lost total margin on reduced volume.

5/6/2025Sal, thanks for the work you do and your even-handed point of view. Just to say about the east & gulf coast ports, "only a quarter" drop is a huge impact on jobs and cost of goods. You've said this on two different episodes, so please make clear that you are talking about significant numbers.

5/6/2025I worked for over 10 years at a large shipping company at the Port of Palm Beach. I didn't notice that port on your list. Are they not feeling the effect right now? My husband was an MM and worked for the same co.
