7/26/2025Haven’t had to dig many large holes so far, save for two animal graves, one having been from this year in fact. That one was maybe four and some change feet down by three feet across I think…? It was a bit above my hip. Gonna ramble a bit about that

Despite the less than optimal reason for digging, I did still find it sort of rewarding. Contemplative. This grave was dug a week in advance, so when I had free time I grabbed a shovel and some gloves before working away at it for a half hour, an hour, forty five minutes, really whatever amount of time I could allot for the day. Took only a couple hours in total, broken up over the course of a few days. Not sure if I made good time, but considering the only physical activity I get on the daily is walking downstairs for the day and upstairs for bed I was pretty happy with the progress

The roots were a challenge and I didn’t have an axe or hatchet, but I did find a small axe head with a missing handle that I could hold in my fist, so along with digging I also had to punch these roots with a dull, rusted axe head for a few minutes before I could continue digging. I live in central FL so I kept expecting to hit water- My child self experienced that issue digging about a foot down with my hand once in a different part of my yard many years ago so I could build a cool bunker for a guy doll I picked up at a garage sale for a few bucks [ended up being a Tunnel Rat G.I. Joe action figure]- though I thankfully never did. The way I got around the sloping hole issue was by angling my shovel with the blade pointing back toward the walls. Also made a point of using a square point shovel so the grave was a more angled shape

For my trouble I found a couple small pieces of broken glass, a little clump of dirt so compact that it felt like a rock, and a random piece of… something. Maybe old, broken piece of a cinder block or something. Really though, the biggest things I got from the experience was some much needed physical exertion and a good amount of time to contemplate our brief existence and the impermanence of life. A bit dramatic, though when you’re digging a grave for your dog who’s laying nearby, literally watching you duck down and pop back up with dirt and cut up tree roots, and knowing that they won’t be there to watch you anymore within a week’s time, it’s kinda hard not to be. A hawk ended up dropping a dead squirrel a few feet away during the digging process before flying a couple feet away into a tree, so I also got a squirrel skull out of the experience as well [I collect bones]. It was a bit of morbid serendipity. Overall: 10/10 digging experience. Felt accomplished, and got to make a nice spot in the shade of three huge camphor trees for my old friend

7/26/20253:36 Literally was listening to the first three minutes debating saving the video for later to go play motherload. Holy shit man, you always do this when nobody else can. Precognized telepathy or some shit.

7/25/2025The discovery of the roots, giving structural integrity to the soil, the clay deeper down, the water... I think my hole digging urge would transition into some kind of soil science interest. How do all these systems work... what if I dig a little hole elsewhere, will it be the same...

7/17/2025Fantastic video! I was a little surprised that you didn't mention the movie Vivarium at first. On a second thought though, it doesn't tie very nicely into the video. I believe the movie is partly a commentary on absent fathers prioritizing work over family BUT one of the characters does dig a very deep as a means of escape from a stressful situation.
@Toy_Tomb
7/16/2025I think it’s gotta be some kind of early mammal instinct deep in our minds, nothing can sneak up and eat you if you’re at the bottom of a deep hole
@Scarlat7777
7/16/2025I expected you to mention Vivarium.
