Correction ~11:45: You won't be ordering your Steam Machine today, but rather joining a queue that will be randomized on June 25th when they will start beginning to fulfill orders.

Pre-order your Companion Cube at https://shortlinus.com

Yes its too weak and expensive, but building a 1080p 60FPS PC right now is also much more expensive than early last year. If this box would have the performance of a PS6 we dont have yet, it would cost atleast 3500 credits...
My guess is that the Steam Machine was in development so long that they had to throw it on the market right now. Just like the PS5 they probably hope for better conditions next year to lower the price or up the specs.
Regardless, a good used PS5 or used PC with a decent GPU will outperform this new thing at a lower price.
The Steam Machine is not a good buy now, 8GB VRAM is too little, the price is too high, and if they up the specs next year this " Launch Editions" will be obsolete like an XBox S.

People complaining about the price of that thing while upgrading to a new iPhone every two years is kinda funny lol.

You also have to remember that the reason why PlayStations and Xboxes are so cheap is because they require a subscription to use any online services. Additionally, you can only purchase from the PlayStation store while on steam machine you can purchase the games from anywhere meaning steam can’t guarantee revenue from games

I really hate being right on Valve not having hardware stocked up before things got really ugly because they were still on the fence about the exact specs.

They will 100% release an upgraded steam machine 2 like a year later and it will double the specs

Think about this the ps5 and Xbox new systems are 5 to 6 years old allready meaning 2 to 3 year the new consoles will be out and if this is badly better then them the new consoles will out perform it and especially that a base PS5 runs better in a lot of games than the steam machine at 4k 60 it’s a hard sell

Here is the hope. I expect valve would, if able, if prices on the components went down, they would reduce the price after launch happily.

Mannnn I was really looking forward to this, but I think I needed it to at least match the performance of my 5 year old console. I’d be open to jumping ship, but I can’t justify that if it isn’t at least equivalent.

I think valve can make bank by just selling steam OS so we use it instead of windows

It's so annoying that the price is what it is and the specs are what they are because of the fucking market conditions. If this was like $700-800ish it would have been a pretty decent value.
The whole idea and execution of the Steam Machine is honestly so cool and fills an actual hole in the market and I'm so grumpy that it probably won't end up selling that much because of the price fuckery.
I also think it would have really helped it if it had like ~10-12 GB VRAM or used unified RAM (but then no upgrade path, boo) as most games are made with the current consoles RAM pools in mind, meaning they typically want at least ~10 GB VRAM to run well and look good. 8 GB is simply not enough unless you start really cutting into settings.

I think people need to respect the engineering of consoles.

A lot of idiots are so fixated on stats-on-paper, meanwhile real life practice says otherwise.

They squeeze in a lot of power FOR THE SIZE of the platform. Obviously, a PC isn't restricted by size, and has much more room to be far more powerful. But imagine squeezing in the power of a full on PC into a console's size -- WITHOUT dealing with heat issues and low-quality parts (which most gaming laptops deal with), and then (at launch) making it $500. For the time of its release, you'd have to completely re-engineer a lot of technology to even function in smaller, tighter spaces.
